Mentoring for Success™A mentoring program would enable an experienced executive to provide guidance, wisdom, knowledge, and support in a manner in which a new manager could receive and benefit from it. The pace of business in the Canadian Pharmaceutical Industry is increasing at a tremendous pace. New managers are left to “learn on the job” and are expected to deliver results with less support; they often feel unsure of their decisions. This is partly the reason why the median term for a Product Manager is 2 years, and why so many seek employment in other positions or companies. Yet research shows that a Mentoring Program can have a positive effect on company performance. In fact 77% of US companies with formal mentoring programs indicated that they experienced improvements in both employee retention and performance. Thus it is not surprising that 71% of Fortune 500 companies use mentoring in their organizations, and that 96% of executives indicated that mentoring is an important developmental tool.1 “When the baby-boomer generation retires, many companies will find out too late that a career’s worth of experience has walked out the door, leaving insufficient talent to fill the void.”2 This quotation underscores the importance of ensuring the transfer of corporate knowledge to the next generation of corporate executives. A mentoring program should be designed to achieve these three goals:
