Pangaea has received confirmation that the amendments to the Patented Medicines Regulations that were supposed to take effect July 1, 2020, will be moved to an implementation date of January 1, 2021.

On June 1, the PMPRB published on their website to confirm, “the new draft will be published on the week of June 15, 2020, and the consultation period will be for 30 days.”

The industry still awaits the final PMPRB Guidelines which will provide direction for operationalizing the Regulations. As stated on the Government of Canada website April 2, 2020, “the PMPRB will be making significant changes to the draft Guidelines in response to the feedback it has received.” In all, the PMPRB received 122 submissions from manufacturers, industry associations, patient groups, payers, distributors and other healthcare related agencies providing, in some cases, very detailed information on how the draft Guidelines could affect all aspects of the industry and most significantly, the patient.

We will await the revised draft Guidelines and provide more information in a future Pangaea Express at that time.
